Q. I have won a mild steel job that falls within PED requirements. My weld procedures and welder approvals are in accordance with ASME Section IX 2013 and they cover the job. Does PED let me use ASME?
A. The Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) does allow ASME Section IX 2013 PQR's and WQT to be used, but only in the range approved by the harmonized standards which are for welding procedures EN ISO 15614-1: 2004 +A2: 2012 and for welder approval testing EN 287-1:2011/EN ISO 9606-1:2013.
There are many differences - for example, your ASME PQR will not cover all diameters or give you all thickness on fillet welds when working under PED rules. You will also need to check that you have had CVN (Charpy V Notch) testing done and at the correct requirement. (PED minimum requirement is -20 27 Joules for a 10 x 10mm sample). Your welders will not be covered for fillet welding by their butt weld test so ,as like harmonized standards, you will need to carry a standalone fillet weld test.
